About the Project

The Cox Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Cox name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Cox name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Coxes), by time period (18th Century Coxes), or by topic (Cox DNA, Cox Occupations, CoxStatistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants of the Surname, COX.

Hi: I would like to join the Cox Project. My maternal grandmother was a Cox, descended from Phillip Cox 1677-1736 England to Somerset Co., NJ & Dorcas Hull 1685-1753 York Co., ME. to Somerset Co., NJ.

John Cox 1703-1767 Somerset Co., NJ to Warren Twp., Sussex Co., NJ & Mary (Taylor) 1705-?

Samuel Cox 1727/1729-? NJ to Halifax & Henry Cos., VA. to Nashville, Davidson Co., NC/TN to Logan & Warren Cos., KY wife unknown.

Phineas Cox 1764-1842 Halifax Co., VA. to Nashville, Davidson Co., NC/TN to Logan & Warren Co., KY. Revolutionary War Soldier. Married Barbara (Barbary) Stump 1762-1756 PA. to GA. to Nashville, to Logan & Warren Cos., KY.

Believed brothers of Phineas: John Cox 1758-1832 Halifax Co., VA. to Warren Co., KY. - m: Sarah Nunnelly; Fulker Cox 1760/1770-1840 Halifax Co., VA. to Marshall Co., MS. - m: Nancy LNU; Samuel Cox, Jr. 1759/1761-1824 Halifax Co., VA. to Giles Co., TN. - m: Catherine Anderson; William Cox ca: 1765-? Halifax Co., VA. to ? - m: possibly Hannah French.

Samuel, Sr. & Jr., John, Fulker, Phineas & William were Al in Logan & Warren Cos., KY. beginning in 1791-1792. John & Phineas remained there, Samuel, Jr., Fulker & William leave for Maury Co., TN. about 1806, 1807 found in Giles Co., TN. Fulker goes to Marshall Co., MS. 1837/1840, William disappears.

I see Phillip Cox 1677-1736 is already a member of the project. I would like to add his descendants, but not clear on how to go about that.

My LNAB is Cox. I am a descendant of William Cox (1711-1782) I have a Find A Grave citation or him and a handwritten genealogy from the 1950s. But, the documentation between then and now is iffy. I find the Cox name in many places unrelated to my own family, so I sometimes work on profiles just because of the name. My ancestors went from Maryland, south to the Carolinas and west to Indiana, some of them stopping and settling along the way. The handwritten genealogy that I have starts with Jesse Cox born in the late 1700s . I am slowly adding all of his descendants and then I may learn to deal with the generations that came earlier.

Doesn’t look like a whole lot of activity within this study, but I’m here anyways.

My Cox tree is currently brick walled at a John Cox I from Pennsylvania. I have nothing on him besides estimated dates and a son, John Cox II.

Dylan, Welcome aboard. I inherited my COX cousin's gedcom which had lots of Jerry's notes which I try to organize in my spare time.

My great grandmother, Helen Cordelia Cox Sexton, was the youngest daughter of Horace V. and Laura (Lara) Sylvana Ray Cox. I've traced Horace's family from Buncombe County, NC down to Middleton Cox from Greenville, SC. From there it seems like, following the paternal Cox line, the fathers bounce between: James, born in North Carolina 1760, dying in South Carolina 1825; Allen, born in Pennsylvania 1735, dying in South Carolina 1794; Thomas, born in Delaware 1694, dying in South Carolina 1774; and finally John born in 1675 Berkshire, England, dying in Pennsylvania 1711.

I'm looking for possible relatives or anyone with information on this particular line of Cox's.

Hi Madeleine,

Welcome to WikiTree.

My 5GGP, John Jacob and Mary (Peck) CARPER had a daughter, Mary who married Reed COX who was born about 1785 in Jefferson Tennessee and eventually settled in Missouri about 1841. They passed through Louisville, Kentucky and Cairo, Illinois. They stopped in Jackson, Missouri where they rented land and planted a crop. Part of their travels can be found here. It doesn't look like they are related to your Cox line.

I found your Ancestry tree which has many sources. Closest possible match I could locate on WikiTree is Allen Cox who had a daughter Ruthy. However, It doesn't look like it is a good match for your tree.

You may want to introduce yourself on g2g using the link on profile for Horace Cox. I added a link on his profile to an Ancestry source you cited.

Happy collaborating, Pat

I don’t know where my Cox ancestors emigrated from. 6 generations back to John Cox from Beaufort, South Carolina, born in 1754. Before that it gets confusing. Any help would be appreciated.

I am looking for the birth/death records for Ruby W. Cox born 1909 in Arkansas, died 1981 possible in California. I know she had at least two daughters born 1927 and 1928. Their father was Lloyd Yarberry. She was also married to a Clarence Scott, who raised the youngest. Possible 3rd marriage to Witt Holden. Most of the records I have located shows her to be from the area of Texarkana Tx (Border Ark). I have located census when she was a child but not much for her adult years. Help?

Hi, I want to add a few profiles to your study:

Pat Gene Cox (Cox-16726). Philip Hugh Cox Jr (Cox-18659). Philip Henry Cox (Cox-18892). Theodore Francis Cox (Cox-19086). Can't remember how I get the image for the profile that states they are a member of the Cox Name study! I will be adding more Cox's. Pat has done the DNA testing. Taylor

G-Grandmother -Mary Elizabeth (Cox) Young (1862 TN - 1954 TN). Her father was Manuel David Cox (1826 TN - 1904 TN). His father was Enos Cox (1797 SC - 1856 TN). His father was Jesse Cox (177 SC - 1849 KY). His father was Emanuel Cox (1723 NJ - 1799 SC). His father was Samuel Cox (1682 England - 1728 NJ). Etc.
My Cox's are from Lincolnshire, UK. They start off in the late 1700s in the south of the county, but, as their fortunes sink, they moved north until they lived in villages around the Humber River. I, however, live in Perth Australia. My grandfather's family moved from Lincolnshire to New Zealand. My dad came to Australia with my mum, having married her in England. Complicated? LOL
I am the great-great grandson of Pleasant C. Cox and Martha Jane Bybee. My Cox family is well researched

They came to Texas in 1756 and associated with the early Spanish Missionaries. They gathered horses during the Revolutionary war for General Washington
